About Limits

What is a Limit?

A limit describes the behavior of a function as the input approaches a specific value. It tells us what value the function gets closer to, even if it never actually reaches that value.

Types of Limits

  • Finite Limits: Function approaches a real number
  • Infinite Limits: Function grows without bound
  • One-Sided Limits: Approaching from left or right only
  • Limits at Infinity: Behavior as x approaches ±∞

Applications

  • Continuity: Determine if functions are continuous
  • Asymptotes: Find horizontal and vertical asymptotes
  • Derivatives: Foundation for derivative definition
  • Series: Convergence and divergence analysis
